Stream Data Centers is an established company with a track record of developing data center facilities. The company in the past had developed nearly a dozen data centers in a variety of business models including build-to-suit projects, powered shells and server-ready buildings and went on to successfully lease those spaces to well-known anchor tenants, such as Cisco Systems, Apple, Nokia and AT&T.
Stream had identified a hole in the Dallas colocation market and an opportunity to construct a 20,000-square-foot data center facility in a suburb of Dallas, Texas, when the real estate market collapsed and the company’s traditional financing sources evaporated. Stream turned to Media Venture Partners, which used its industry relationships to identify and secure a source for private equity that enabled Stream to fully-finance its construction project in late 2009 — at a time when virtually no one was able to secure financing for “spec” data center builds.
